What You Need for a Video Call

A video call needs three things: a phone, tablet or computer with a camera, an internet connection (ideally home Wi-Fi), and the same app as the person you are calling.

Which app?

FaceTime works between Apple devices. WhatsApp works on almost any smartphone. Zoom is common for groups and meetings and works on everything. Ask your family which one they use, and use the same.

Step by step

  1. Ask your family which app they prefer.
  2. Check the app is on your device, or add it from the official app store.
  3. Connect to home Wi-Fi before calling.
  4. Charge your device or keep it plugged in for long calls.

Common mistakes

  • Downloading a lookalike app from an advert. Use the official store only.

Try it yourself

  • Ask one family member which video app they use.
