Buttons, Screen and Your First Taps

Your phone has only a few physical buttons. The side or top button turns the screen on and off, and the volume buttons make sounds louder or quieter. Almost everything else happens by touching the glass screen.

Tap, press and swipe

A tap is a quick, light touch with the pad of your finger, like pressing a lift button. A long press means keeping your finger still on the screen for about a second. A swipe means sliding your finger across the glass, as if brushing away a crumb.

Step by step

  1. Press the side button once to wake the screen.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen (or enter your code) to get to the home screen.
  3. Tap one app, such as the Clock, to open it.
  4. Swipe up from the bottom, or tap the home button if your phone has one, to go back home.
  5. Press the side button again to put the screen to sleep.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing too hard. The screen responds to a light touch, not to pressure.
  • Holding the side button for a long time, which may open a power-off menu. If that happens, tap Cancel.

Tips

  • Helpful tip: If taps do not work, try the pad of your finger rather than a fingernail, and make sure your hands are dry.

Try it yourself

  • Wake your screen, open the Clock app, go back to the home screen and put the screen to sleep. Repeat three times.
