What the Cloud Really Is

The cloud is storage on secure computers run by companies such as Apple and Google. Your phone copies your photos there so they survive if the phone is lost.

Step by step

  1. Think of it as a safe deposit box for your photos.
  2. Apple uses iCloud; Android phones usually use Google Photos and Google One.
  3. A small amount of storage is free; more costs a monthly fee.
  4. Your account password and two-step verification protect it.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking deleting a photo from the phone keeps it in the cloud. Deleting usually removes it everywhere.

Try it yourself

  • Find out whether your phone uses iCloud or Google.
